JOANNE RAPHAEL KATZ

Joanne began her career with an academic background in Law. This led her into the fascinating area of Intellectual Property and is a founder in the licensing industry in Africa, specializing in building brands and exploiting famous Copy Rights and Trademarks into various touch points such as television, consumer products, publishing, land based entertainment, advertising, sponsorship and promotions.

LICENSEE – PUBLISHING

Obtained the African rights to publish DC, Marvel, Warner, Disney and Harvey comics.

LICENSING AGENT

  • Created ‘edutainment’ special print projects, where Spiderman taught kids that their bodies are their own and delved into the conspiracy of silence and deeper issues, advocationg the end to child abuse.
  • Expanded her portfolio of Licensors to include Entertainment Studios like Universal, DreamWorks, Paramount and Children’s Television Workshop, MTV. SABN, Pokèmon and many others.

CUSTOM LICENSING

Introduced another licensing innovation, youth banking, creating Junior Bob and BOB T personal banking products for the segmented youth market.

CONSUMER PRODUCTS LICENSING

Creation and licensing of Edgars, the largest retailer in South Africa with rights to open 20 shop within shop universal retail concepts in Edgars stores, the largest retailer in South Africa.

OWN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

JOHNNIC FILM EDUCATION

Johnic Film Education, a national film based educational project in conjunction with Nu Metro cinemas, introducing disadvantaged youth to a movie experience.
The Film Education programme’s aims are to develop the use of Film
in the School curriculum and facilitate the use of cinema by schools.

EARLY TIMES

Early Times “ a children’s newspaper, explaining simplistically breaking news, investigative journalism, informative factual content, current affairs, politics, areas of conflict and reasons, music, theatre, movies, art and lifestyle. The journalists were 12 to 14 years old, the associate editors were 14 to 16 years, and the editors were 16 to 18. They were trained as news cadets by the local leading press group, and the project was extraordinarily well received by the public and stakeholders.

It is one thing to handle existing Intellectual Properties and quite another thing to create Intellectual Property. Exceptional Marks has accomplished this successfully.
